May Bumps 2015: W1 Day Two

So, today the tables turned for W1 this year. We had an epic row over today and I think to fully appreciate it I need to tell you the story.

Once pushed off we were at a dodgy angle, facing the bank and the first few strokes were a bit touch and go. Luckily we recovered and set off back on track. Unfortunately it wasn’t the best start we’ve ever done and Selwyn really flew off of theirs – they knew they had to get us before Jesus II got them. By the motorway bridge Churchill had pulled away from us and Selwyn had the first whistle on us. We matched them and held them until half way down First Post Reach where they quickly gained a succession of whistles getting very close! Around First Post it looked like all was lost, initially we were going to go for a wide line to put off the bump, but a last minute coxing change lead to a tighter line and although Selwyn’s was better they didn’t utilise their advantage and we managed to gain back some water. Jesus II were nowhere in sight.

The Gut saw Catz make another move although matching lines around Grassy saw a bit of overlap of the Selwyn Bow and our Stern. Luckily no contact was made. We made ground and lost it coming out of the corner with several instances of overlap but some nifty steering and some beautiful lifts from the girls saw us pull away every time. Jesus II at this stage sensed that Selwyn were crumbling and could not execute their bump and went from one length to the bump within what seemed like twenty stokes. By the Plough Selwyn had succumbed to Jesus II and we were free to row over the course a couple of Pips lower than we had been. Murray Edwards were a speck in the distance and Pembroke rowed over ahead meaning we could row proudly passed our boys on the bank.

Really well done today girls, you did yourselves proud. Tomorrow is exciting as we have round two with Peterhouse and a similar situation as Churchill with Jesus II behind. Bring it on!

May Bumps 2015: W2 Day Two

W2 today were looking forward to showing off the full power of their start, and stuck perfectly to the plan, gaining steadily on Selwyn through the ditch and the gut. As fitness levels started to tell the advance stalled, and they were held at around quarter of a length coming into grassy corner. Unfortunately, FaT had been gaining on Catz at a similar rate, and their finishing move proved too much for a tired W2. Tomorrow looks set for a solid rowover. 

May Bumps 2015 - Day the First

The run up to the M1 bumps campaign was fraught with eventfulness, sprained ribs, new boat, new stroke, broken feet, you name it; it probably happened. So it was a relief to row up to station with 9 healthy men and a snazzy boat (seriously, have you seen the riggers?!). We had quite the feat ahead of us, smash FAT, and failing that hold off Queen’s until Clare bumped them.

It started off promisingly, hours of practice led to a rapid start, pushing off Queen’s and gaining ground on FAT. Sadly, it was not last, Queen’s found another gear and began to push onto us, a gear we couldn’t match. Despite this we held them off valiantly all the way to Ditton corner, giving Clare ample time to act….which they did not do. So the bump came to pass, sad times.

 

However, not all doom and gloom, we had a powerful start and know we have more to give, so onwards and upwards.

May Bumps 2015: W1 Day One

From a crew that no one thought would make it past the motorway bridge, I think being bumped by the Plough is a testament to just how much this crew has come on this term.

W1 had a glorious row down to the lock and our start outside the Plough was quite frankly beautiful. The real thing was powerful and controlled even with a strong tail wind the girls coped really well. We settled into our rhythm and made ground on Peterhouse, coming within a few strokes of the first whistle half way down first post reach. Churchill were nowhere near as close as they thought they would be (we had been told we would get 3 1/2 mins of race time) and took an iffy line around first post meaning we pushed away from them.

Unfortunately Peterhouse moved back outside the one length and we didn't manage to get it back. By the time we came around Grassy Churchill were hunting us down. A valiant effort from our girls held Chirchill at bay and some cheeky coxing delayed the bump until the Plough.

Tomorrow is a new day and maybe we will get a second shot at Peterhouse on Friday. We rowed for just over 5 minutes so I think we really surprised everyone!

May Bumps 2015: W2 Day One

Rowed over.

In a victory for the Scales model of calm and efficient racing, W2 were so fired up as to make stroke literally jump off her seat at the sound of the cannon. Despite this, a wobbly Girton crew were sent off into the distance by bow seven until stroke recovered. The crew then gained on Emma ahead but were only able to recover back to station. Emma then bumped out leaving Catz in glorious isolation. 

Or so we thought until Jesus (the crew chasing the double overbump on Catz) hove ominously into view shortly after Ditton corner. Catz recognised the threat at the railway bridge and produced a very gutsy push to hold Jesus off until 2 strokes after crossing the finish line where the umpires, ignoring Jesus' celebrations, awarded Catz the row-over, thanks to some emphatic pointing at the finish line from the bank party.

Hopes are high for tomorrow, aiming to unleash the full Catz W2 start on an average-looking Selwyn crew.   

May Bumps 2015 Overview

May Bumps starts on Wednesday 10th June and we have 6 Catz crews participating. M1 and W1 are racing in the respective first divisions, M2 are in the men's third division (maybe also in the second division if they can bump up), W2 are racing in the women's third division, M3 are in the men's fourth division, M4 are rowing in the men's fifth division.

Small Boats Regatta 2015

SCCBC entered 5 events in the SBR this year. Due to a shortage of marshalls, all races were run side-by-side over a 500m course on the reach.

Men's captain-elect Will Norman (M1 Lents 2015) raced in the Peter Brandt (Men's Novice) Sculls: having only learnt to row in October, and not been in a scull before January, he battled hard but was ultimately well beaten by a significantly more experienced sculler from FaT. Sarah Lucas (Women's Captain 2013-14, CUWBC Lightweights 2014-15) was declared the winner of the Delafield (Women's Elite) Sculls by virtue of being the only entrant, before teaming up with a fellow trialist from Fitz to race in the Women's Double Sculls. The straight final against Caius was possibly one of the closest races of the day, with Caius half a length up at the finish.

I had entered the Fairbairn Junior Sculls for the second year running: having had my opponent scratch on the morning of the regatta, I found myself with a bye into the semi-finals. I was a canvas up after the first five strokes, but never properly settled and found my opponent rowing through me, winning by roughly a length of clear water. Sarah and I then teamed up for the Mixed Doubles - again a scratching opposition (apparently one of them was still at Caversham for the GB trials) meant we had a bye into the semi-finals. Our first race was a fairly relaxed row against Selwyn, with Catz 3 lengths up at the finish. We knew we would have to race much harder to win the final against a very experienced Magdalene/Caius brother-and-sister pairing, and desite our best efforts, their height and weight advantage prevailed.

Congratulations to all those who raced today, and many thanks to the umpires and marshalls for ensuring the event could run. Hopefully Catz can build on today's results, and maintain our position as one of the top "Small Boats" colleges. FTW!

Lent Bumps 2015: M2 Day Four

As it turns out, Churchill were even faster than Clare.

We had another pretty reasonable start, and had a great push around first post, but going down the gut, Churchill inched nearer and nearer. Our kill bought us a few seconds, but their higher power output meant our fate was sealed as we headed around grassy.

Tash did a great job coxing under tough conditions yet again, and she held off the concession as long as was feasible, but soon contact was made and we were left to pull in. Credit to the very fast Churchill crew, it was a great effort.

I have really enjoyed captaining M2 this term, and we are all looking forward to training over Easter, and coming back even stronger for Mays. Also, shout out to our fantastic coach, Simon Wright, for which this is his last full term in Cambridge. We wish him all the best.
