M1 Mays 2016: Day One

We went into today certain of nothing, but able to guess quite a lot.  It always looked likely that Peterhouse would bump King's quickly and leave us nothing to aim for, and we knew Emma would think they had a good chance of a quick bump on us.  We started hard and kept on station with both crews at first, but though committed our rowing was far from our best, and sure enough, Peterhouse bumped King's and cleared out of our way just in time on First Post corner.  Emma had taken in a lot of ground over the last part of First Post Reach and around the corner, and early in the Gut they came to quarter of a length, and then a canvas.  And there they stayed; for two full minutes we held them off, around Grassy, past the Plough, and into Ditton Corner.  At times they came to within centimetres, and at other moments we pushed away from them again.  They wouldn't break, however, and eventually we were forced to take Ditton wide to avoid them, giving them the racing line and an opportunity to take in those final two feet and get the bump.  We can, and will, row better the rest of this week, but today was by far the gutsiest performance I've ever seen from M1, and in some ways we are prouder of this row than if we had bumped.

W1 - May Bumps 2016 - Day 1

Start of May’s 2016 was a hopefully one for W1; after beating Kings at Champs Head, we were looking faster and feeling good. Sparring with Kittens, Catz M3 and Catz W2 – we had some preparation under our belts. However we sat at the bottom of division 1; therefore there was unknown about who would be the sandwich boat.

Selwyn W1 proceeded to get bumped by Magdalene W1, and now our match was set. Magdalene was in-between us and a bump on Kings. After the cannon we had a funky start but settled into a good rhythm. But before we knew it Magdalene had a whistle on us, no fear we had a gained a whistle on Kings, game on. Now it was a battle between 3 boats. Magdalene looking stronger with each stroke, Kings were starting to break down and we were gaining. But before we could finish it off, Magdalene had got us just before first post. With us ¾ of a boat length off Kings. This sadly means we drop into division 2. However this is just a toe dipping, Catz W1 will be back and we will get Kings, however long it takes.

W2 - May Bumps 2016 - Day 1

W2 was up early this morning for some last-minute bung starts practice, before returning to college to sleep off the after-effects of yesterday's exam-finishing celebrations.

We regrouped after lunch, with a row down to the start that was together, if a little nervy. Starting on station 12, our start was good, settling into an aggressive rhythm. St Edmunds W1, staring behind us, gained slightly off the start but we held them at a length for most of First Post reach. However, their training during evening hours had paid off, and their superior technique began to tell. We were bumped on first post corner.

Tomorrow we are being chased by Girton W2, while St Edmunds are chasing Selwyn W2. If we can hold Girton away then we can look forward to day three with expectation.

FTW

M2 Day 4

Emma II continued their fine run of messing up bumps for us by having their rudder break, thus crashing and getting caught by Christs. So started another epic battle between us and Hughes M1, who we pushed off despite our bowman catching a crab halfway down the reach. Our third row over ended what was a fantastic bumps campaign. It's been a pleasure to row with the crew, and I look forward to seeing how M2 will fare in Mays.

M1 Lents 2016: Day Four

On the last day of Lent Bumps we found ourselves chasing Christ's again.  We knew it would be tough to catch them, but we also knew they were unlikely to escape by bumping out, as they did on Thursday.  Once again we had nothing to worry about behind us - all that counted was getting close enough to Christ's to finish them off on the Long Reach.  A strong start gave us a bit of ground, but choppy water through the Gut threw us off and allowed them to slip away again.  Christ's were rowing strongly, buoyed by the potential for a bump on Robinson, and they moved further away from us along Plough Reach.  As before, however, everything came together as we came out of Ditton corner and onto the Reach, and we first held them, and then started to slowly take ground out of them.  Our row up the Reach was epic - despite our burning legs and fading vision each push increased the boat speed, and as we came under the railway bridge we finally got a whistle on them.  We turned up the volume yet again, and over the last couple of hundred metres took another half length out of them.  Sadly, it was all a little too late, and the finish line saved Christ's, who crossed it ahead of us with just a few feet between our boats.  'Almost bumped' doesn't count for anything so our bumps campaign ended with two bumps and two unchallenged rowovers.  There is always a strong element of chance in bumps, so we'll take that - more significant, perhaps, is the fact that we demonstrated clearly that we were faster than any of the boats close to us in the division, and therefore achieved the goal we set ourselves at the beginning of term.  We are going to give everything to repeat this achievement in Mays.

W2 Lents 2016: Day Four

W2's plan for today was simple: row as well as we had done yesterday, and get the same result. Unfortunately no-one told Clare Hall, who decided that today they would rather not row the full length of the course.

While the results this week have not gone perfectly, I am so proud the crew for all the hard work they have put in this term, and all the changes they have begun to make. Ten members of SCCBC have had their first experience of racing bumps, and we will use that experience next term. In the Mays, we are chasing a certain Jesus W3 on day one. W2 aren't ready yet - but they will be. FTW!

M1 Lents 2016: Day Three

Thursday's rowover prompted some deep thought on why we hadn't caught Christ's, and what we would do differently chasing King's on Friday.  The consensus: row better.  We kept our heads in our boat this time, instead of worrying about what was happening up ahead, and after a slightly ineffective first half the rowing came together coming out of Grassy Corner.  Still on station at that point, a united push brought us up to a length off King's as we passed the Plough, and then after a strong corner we came together again out of Ditton and started to build up the pressure.  Our mentality changed as we realized the hunt was properly on, and a series of sharp pushes quickly brought us to half a length off, quarter of a length, canvas... and then by the railings those of us in the bows felt King's' stern scraping along our boat; on my right I caught a glimpse of their stern, reached out, and gave it a few thumps just to make sure.

(Clare finally got their bump too, and as they rowed past we all agreed to forget the farce of the previous day and be friends)

M2 Lents 2016 Day 3

We knew today was going to be tough. Cursed by another day with a slow crew two stations ahead of us, we knew that we would be hard pressed to catch Emma II before they caught Christs II. Only this time we had had the added pressure of Hughes I behind us, who were no slouches. The crews all remained roughly on station through the gut, when Emma got their first whistle on Christs, followed by our first whitsle on Emma. Hughes remained on station. As Christs predictably began to fade, Emma smelt the bump, and held us level as they moved in on Christs, finally bumping them on Ditton. As we rowed past we knew we were going all the way to top finish (no boats ahead to overbump unfortunately) and settled into our rythm, Hughes still in hot pursuit. All the land training finally paid off though, and half way down the reach Hughes started to inch backwards, stroke by stroke, and we knew they didn't have it in them to catch us. We pushed past the marshalling crews and hit the finish with a healthy two lengths between us, denying Hughes their blades and giving ourselves the reward of getting to chase Christs on day 4.
