May Bumps 2015 - Day the Third

Ah Hubris… what a time to strike. You wouldn’t have thought a crew down two could get a little over confident but that’s where you’d be wrong. Buoyed up buy a fierce effort against Clare, and in the knowledge that Kings weren’t as fast we let the temptress known as ‘we can row over’ lull us into changing both the plan and our ‘find the red line and sit your ass on it’ attitude.

So despite a strong row up, and solid practice start when the fateful canon went we left just a little in reserve each stroke, I mean we had 2.6K to power through, no point getting tired now, right? Wrong, Kings started uncharacteristically fast and caught us with our pants down and our heads in the wrong 500m of the course.

We were bumped disappointingly before grassy corner and that was the end of it. Back at the rowing cave a firm resolve settled upon the crew, new names (of varying wit and historical context) were thrown about for the boat, and Saturday is so very on.

May Bumps 2015: M2 Day Three

With confidence that a slower-than-expected Emma M2 on our tails meant we'd finally have a chance of a row-over, our row down experienced a seed change, with powerful and committed battle paddling and much more optimistic camaraderie.

We had a clean, hi-rating start, and held the crews around well, till Emma M2 began to make their move into the stride, and were at a length coming round Ditton. We held them off quite valiantly, with strong and committed pushes to drive them away, but eventually, their push overpowered us as we passed the plough. Credit to Emma M2 for a good race.

I look forward to finishing this week's row with our heads held high, and with the same guts, attitude and humour we displayed yesterday. Let's do this guys.

May Bumps 2015: M4 Day One

Having had a strong performance in the getting on race, we entered the first day in high spirits.  Having seen Homerton M3 and their lightweight trialists, we knew it would be a tough race but thought that we should be able to catch Emma M4 before Homerton caught up - however we had banked on a stronger start that we managed.

The start fell apart allowing Homerton to quickly gain half a length.  When we hit the stride we started making up station on Emma but it came too late as Homerton seized the moment and rapidly got the bump a few hundred metres past the motorway bridge.

Having settled down into a solid rythym after a dodge start, we felt optimistic about our chances for day two - confident in our chances of a better performance the next day.

May Bumps 2015: M3 Day Two

Thursday was a much better day for M3 than the heartbreak of Wednesday as we finally managed to execute our race plan and didn't harm any wildlife in our pursuit of glory. We knew that the St Edmund's crew that we were chasing were slower than us, and so they proved to be- whistles arrived quickly and we bumped before First Post corner.

On Friday we will be chasing a competent Corpus M2 who are chasing a slow Clare M3 so it will probably be a bit more of a challenge. However, as anyone who has rowed in Cambridge will know, in Bumps anything can happen!

Mays 2015: W1 Day Three

We rowed for a grand total of 2 ½ minutes before our saviours from yesterday, Jesus II, took us out with a blade to the stern.

I can’t really write this report without saying that they were a very good crew. They were stronger than us and bigger than us and fair play to them they really did execute it well today.

They had a whistle on us before the motorway bridge and I guess if I was in their seat I would say it was a text book bump. They had us half way between the Motorway Bridge and First Post and despite our best efforts we could not hold them off. In front of us we made some ground on Peterhouse but not enough to get a whistle.

Tomorrow we have Kings behind us who took out Selwyn just as we were clearing the river.

May Bumps 2015: W2 Day Three

After the disappointment of yesterday, Catz knew today was a case of rowing over between two strong crews. A strong start held Newnham on station for the first minute or so, but then Newnham started to gradually eat up the distance, bumping just on the apex of first post corner, cheerfully displacing a number of picnicking alumni outside the marquees.

Tomorrow will see W2 again looking for a rowover, needing to stay ahead of a solid looking Jesus.

May Bumps 2015: M3 Day Three

The plan for Friday was to catch a fast Corpus crew before they caught Clare, so as with everyday we went as hard as we could off the line and hoped that it would work for us. Unfortunately Corpus bumped Clare just before Grassy and then failed to clear, which meant that we had to hold it up hard to avoid a collision and were awarded a technical rowover. This wasn't too annoying as if we'd carried on rowing, we probably would have just rowed over so we got the same result with far less effort!

On Saturday we'll be chasing a Clare crew who are on for spoons while being chased by a Wolfson crew on for blades, but we know that we are capable of bumping up on the final day of this eventful campaign.

May Bumps 2015: M3 Day One

M3 went into Wednesday confident that we would bump Caius M3 quickly having done our best rowing in our last two outings and nailed the practise start on the day. Sadly, this didn't happen.

We were on station 6, aka the outflow station, and the wind was strong which meant that we started at an angle to the bank and after about 10 strokes were parked in the opposite bank and an average to poor looking St Edmund's crew rowed past for the easiest bump anyone will ever achieve. However, those 10 strokes have made us confident that we can get them back tomorrow.

In short, not the first day that anyone was hoping for, but stuff like this happens in Bumps and hopefully Thursday will bring the bump that we know we should have got on Wednesday.

May Bumps 2015: M2 Day One

With Joe Cooper called up to M1, and Stuart still ill, we roped in our coach, Ivan Scales, and M2 emeritus, Julian Russ, to assist in our efforts to row over head of the M3 division.

We arrived early atbh, washed down the boat, and with a bit of confusion over timings, ended up mashalling prematurely, and meeting the crews rowing up from the previous division by Chesterton. So we sat under a tree by the bridge, jesting and laughing as the crews who'd be chasing us rowed by. Despite knowledge about how strong Pembroke II (rowing second in the division) were this term, morale was running high (if only in despair), as we pinned our hopes on an equally speedy Emma II catching Pembroke as we held them off.

Alas, Emma was nowhere to be seen (eventually being bumped by Clare in the run up to Ditton), and we ended up pulling into Grassy after conceding the bump. Today, we have Clare on our tails, and Pembroke (who failed to bump up into div 2) ahead.

Wish us luck.

May Bumps 2015: M2 Day Two

With Peter Wothers phoning in with an emergecy exam meeting, we were left to find 3 subs today. Thankfully, Ivan and Julian once more stepped up to the plate; and we got Alistair Nelson on board to fill our third gap - very well rowed, cheers Alistair!

All in all, today went slightly better than yesterday. We had a great start, very technical, but powerful and efficient. We held off Clare till grassy. Tomorrow, we are confident that a row over is definitely possible if we row as well as we rowed today, with a slower than anticipated Emma II on our tails. Fingers crossed.

PS: Shout out to our normal bow man, Stuart, who's currently in hospital with a nasty virus. We all wish him a very speedy recovery.
